How to make Lan Cable (Ethernet Cable)

A local area network (LAN) is a group of computers and associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link to a server. Typically,a LAN encompasses computers and peripherals connected to a server within a distinct geographic area such as an office or a commercial establishment. Lan can also be used between two computers for purpose of file sharing. Also they can be used to host a common network by connecting which we play games like Counter strike, Blur, Call of Duty, WWE Raw, Takken etc.

  

Lan Cable (Ethernet Cable)

Lan cables are the specific type of data cables used in computer networking.There are three types of local area network cables. One is standard cable that connects a computer to a router or a hub, and the second is called the cross over cable used to connecting two computers together.

Equipment Required

• Bulk Ethernet Cable- Category 5e or CAT5e (You may also use category 6  or CAT6  cabling which has higher performance specifications and is about 20% more expensive than CAT5e)
• Bulk RJ45- Crimpable Connectors for CAT-5e or Bulk RJ45 Crimpable Connectors for CAT-6
• RJ-45 Crimping Tool

There are three types of LAN cables

 1.Straight Through Cable

Straight through Ethernet cables are the standard cable used for almost all purposes, and are also called patch cables. It is highly recommended you to duplicate the color order as shown on the left. Note how the green pair is not side-by-side as are all the other pairs. This configuration allows for longer wire runs. Every other LAN cable type is different from each other with respect to the connection between these two ends.

2.Cross-Over Cable

The purpose of a Crossover Ethernet cable is to directly connect one computer to another computer(or device) without going through a router,switch or hub.

3.Roll-Over Cable

Rollover cable (also known as Cisco console cable or a Yostcable) is a type of null modem cable that is often used to connect a computer terminal to a router's console port. This cable is typically flat (and has a light blue color) to help distinguish it from other types of network calling.

Making of LAN cable

1.Cut the plastic sheath about 1 inch(2.5cm) or whatever length you take (but be careful because the whole cutted part is going within the connector) from the end of the cut cable. The crimping tool has a razor blade that will do the trick with practice.

2.Unwind and pair the similar colors just as shown in the figure, you'll also observe that it has 4 parts divided into two sub parts one with dark colors and other with light color.

3.Pinch the wires between your fingers and straighten them out as shown, the color order is important to get correct.

4.Use scissors to make a straight cut across the 8 wires to shorten them to 1/2 inch(1.3 cm) from the cut sleeve to the end of the wires.







5.Carefully push all 8 unstripped colored wires into the connector.
 note the position of the blue plastic sleeve, also note how the           wires go all the way to the end,
And how you connect them from connectors is going to decide   which type of ethernet you are making.              

6.A view from the top. All the wires are all the way in. There are no short wires.

Some Wrong ways to connect the Cable with the Connetor

7.For a standard Straight through cable, repeat all steps and wire color order on the other end of a cable, and for cross cable, the other end will have different color order as shown in cross over color code diagram above.

8.Make sure to test the cables before installing them. An expensive Ethernet cable tester does this quite well.
